What is Ayurveda? A deeper look at the world’s oldest system of health care.

What is Ayurveda?

As we move into an age where information is at our fingertips, we are becoming increasingly curious about what we are putting into our bodies and the effect this has on our physical, mental and emotional states. This curiosity has bred a desire for alternative ways of being that focus on sustainability, compassion and plant-based living.

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest system of healthcare that is based upon the relationship between the mind, body, soul and emotions. Ayurveda provides us with the tools to live in harmony with our environment while not only curing disease but preventing it through plant-based living, daily + seasonal rituals/practices and an emphasis on mental + emotional wellbeing. Ayurveda is the sister science to Yoga.

Ayurveda ‘the science of life’

Ayu = life • Veda = knowledge/science

What does Ayurveda believe in?
  • Ayurveda considers the relationship between the mind and body to be the ultimate source of physical and mental health.
  • Ayurveda believes most disease begins in the mind (emotional) and manifests through the different stages of disease before appearing physically.
  • Ayurveda believes even the smallest of symptoms should be treated in order to prevent disease from escalating.
  • Ayurveda factors in diet & lifestyle practices that work in harmony with the elements (doshas), as well as nature and the seasons.
  • Ayurveda is deeply rooted in ‘ahimsa’ or the philosophy of non-violence centred around respect for all sentient beings and sustainable practices focused on universal protection.
  • Ayurveda sees medicine & diet as complementary rather than separate.

Ayurveda is the combination of vegetarianism, plant medicine, yoga, meditation, compassion and spirituality..

Ayurveda is more than just a way of living, it is the ‘art of living’.

Where does Ayurveda come from?

Ayurveda originated in India many thousands of years ago and was born out of a necessity to both prevent and heal disease using what was available organically in the environment as well as recalibrating the equilibrium in the body through mental rest (meditation) and a spiritual anchor. Spiritually refers to the interconnectedness of all beings and the environment, therefore treating people, plants and animals with equal love and respect as you would yourself or your family. Ayurveda is a source of deep, revolutionary knowledge which was accessed through meditation and passed on through poetry and song for thousands of years. Ayurveda has been used to treat millions of people all over the world and the belief in this ‘science of life’ is now stronger than ever.

What does an Ayurvedic Lifestyle consist of?
  • Yoga, meditation & pranayama
  • Self-care practices including self-massage, salt baths, herbal skin treatments, relaxation therapies, rejuvenating practices (tongue scraping, neti, oil pulling etc)
  • Eating a diet rich in plant-based foods including fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains, legumes and lots of medicinal spices
  • Cooking nourishing, fresh, nutrient-rich meals (avoiding raw/cooling foods)
  • Using local, seasonal, sustainable, organic produce (avoiding processed, chemically enhanced foods & products)
  • Getting adequate, deep sleep that leaves you rested & restored
  • Living in tune with nature and the seasons – sleeping & eating should be guided by the sun and ample time should be spent connecting with nature.
  • Treating all plants, animals and people equally with love & respect
  • Expressing compassion, communication and creativity
  • Providing service to the community and those in need
